Melbourne Celtic Festival

Shane Lestideau is a French Australian violinist with a lifelong passion for the fiddle music of the Celtic nations. With family roots in Ireland’s West-coast and Brittany (France), Shane’s playing draws on the Sligo fiddle style, traditional and contemporary Breton music, as well as the historical Scottish repertoire in which she has specialised. Having maintained a dual career as both a classical and folk musician, Shane enjoys carving out a musical space for herself between virtuosity and tradition, performance and playfulness, and has toured extensively in Australia and Europe. She directs Evergreen Ensemble, renowned for their exploration of 18thC Scottish music, and has produced and directed seven and a 7-string viola d’amore, using different tuning systems to bring colour and texture to her arrangements and compositions.

Chris Catriona Shane 2025.jpg

7 April 2025

Chris Stout & Catriona McKay

with Shane Lestideau

Catriona (Celtic harp) & Chris (fiddle, viola) are one of Scotland best loved duos with roots in Scottish traditional music. On tour in Australia, they will perform here as a trio with Shane Lestideau (fiddle and viola d'amore) for a special night of inspired musical creativity and collaboration.

Chris and Catriona have performed, explored and sculpted their musical identities together for more than 25 years. Through a respect for tradition and a spirit of experimentation they continue to evolve and create a sound sensation and style “operating at a rarefied level of expertise.”

Shane is a renowned Australian fiddler with a passion for history and musical storytelling. Moving seamlessly between baroque repertoire, traditional Scottish tunes, and new Australian compositions, she draws on her parallel career as a classical violinist to take her fiddle playing to new and unexpected places.

The concert will take place in the beautiful 1854 salon of 'The Heights' heritage house in Geelong.

Commissions

2017

"Saturation" by Alice Chance.

Commissioned and premiered by Evergreen Ensemble at the Port Fairy Spring Music Festival

Baroque Violin, Baroque Viola, Baroque Cello.

I'm passionate about Australian music and being part of the writing, commissioning and performing of new works by Australian composers. In 2016 I launched the Australian Baroque Sonatas Project (ABSP) with Evergreen Ensemble. The goal is to commission a series of sonatas for period instruments written by Australian composers. Inspired by the music of 17th and 18th centuries, the sonatas are not written in imitation of the 'baroque style' but aim to find a new voice for old instruments within the Australian musical landscape. The first four commissions have been from the Sydney-based composer, Alice Chance.
